Sâncraiu - Kalotaszentkirály-Zentelke
Sâncraiu is situated by the Kalota Stream, 5 kilometers from Huedin. The peak of the surrounding mountains is Vigyázó Peak. The landscape is rather diverse: there are forests, valley gorges, waterfalls and caves. More than seven lakes await fishers, divers, lovers of water sports and anyone who would like to enjoy the clean air of the mountains.
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1288 and its church was probably built in the 13th century also. 1200 people live there today, mostly Calvinist Hungarians. Excellent craftsmen inhabit the village: carpenters, joiners, bricklayers, fur-makers.
Old Hungarian traditions are alive in the village still, for instance people still wear their splendid costumes on holidays.
Since the village is close to the Hungarian border those who wish to travel farther into Transylvania might want to stay here on the first night of their trip. It is also possible, however, to spend a couple of nights in the village because the whole area can be explored from here with the help of a so-called ’star-route’.
To approach Sâncraiu take the Oradea-Cluj international road to Huedin. In the middle of Huedin, by the Calvinist church turn off the highway at the sign ’Albac, Beliş’ and leave the town following that road. After 5 kms make a right at the sign that says ’Sâncraiu’ and that road will take you right to the village.
